Below are answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions about our Paternity Tests. Simply click on each question to expand the relevant section. If you have any questions about our other tests or services please see our Sibling DNA Testing page or our Kinship (Relationship) Testing page, or contact us.
A child receives half their genetic information (DNA) from their biological mother and half from their biological father. So, first a number of specific areas of DNA are tested in order to determine the genetic profile of each person involved in the paternity test. Then, these DNA profiles are analysed to establish how much genetic information, if any, was contributed to the child by a potential father.
We offer NATA accredited: legal paternity testing and peace of mind (non-legal) paternity testing.
Our NATA legal paternity tests are suitable for court, legal and government use. For example, they may be used for cases involving child custody, child support, inheritance or to change a birth certificate.
Our NATA peace of mind paternity tests are for your personal information. They are not legal tests and are not intended for use in a court of law.
For more information about the types of paternity tests we offer please see our paternity testing page.
We also offer other DNA testing services such as sibling testing, grandparent and other family relationship (kinship) testing.
To perform a paternity test we need DNA samples, such as mouth swabs, from each person.
A mouth swab is simply a swab of the cheek cells from inside your mouth. Samples are taken with sterile mouth swabs, which are provided in your test kit. This is the easiest way to obtain a sample for testing and is completely painless. The DNA from the swab is then transferred onto special paper to preserve the sample. Comprehensive instructions of this simple process are provided in your DNA collection kit.
If you would like to provide a different type of sample please contact us to discuss this.
The DNA collection kit contains everything that you will need to take your samples, including an application form, full instructions on how to take your samples, a swab and FTA card for each person and a reply paid express return envelope.
Yes, we can send kits to two different addresses. If you are ordering online please let us know in the comments field that kits need to be sent to two addresses. Also place the full name and address for the second delivery address in the comments field. If you wish to order over the phone please let us know that you need kits sent to two addresses and we will arrange this.
Unused swabs will keep indefinitely as long as the packaging is intact.
Once the swabs have been opened and used to take a mouth swab sample the whole process needs to be completed.
If the swabs cannot be returned promptly please keep them under refrigerated conditions.
No, provided you have a sample from the potential father, you do not need a sample from the mother for the paternity test to work. However, providing a sample from the mother increases the accuracy of the DNA analysis because we then have more genetic information to compare.
If a sample cannot be obtained from the potential father, relatives of the potential father can be tested in his place. This may be the potential father's parents or siblings (i.e. a brother or sister). Samples from these relatives, along with samples from the mother and child are tested in order to determine paternity. Please call (03) 8418 8080 to discuss your case with us.
